Learning the 11 times table

Start by saying the 11 times table in order, so your child can see the pattern in the answers before any of it is tested at random. Patterns make the list feel shorter than it is.

Once in-order recall is comfortable, switch to mixed questions. This is the step most children skip, and it is the one that shows whether a fact is really known or is just being counted on from the previous answer.

Finally, mix the 11 times table in with tables your child already knows. Multiplication is only useful when the right fact arrives without being hunted for, and that only happens once the tables compete with each other.

Getting the most out of the games

  1. Start with one table in order, so the pattern is visible before the facts are tested out of sequence.
  2. Switch the same table to mixed order once the answers come easily — in-order recall often hides a gap.
  3. Add a second table and mix the two together, which is where children discover that 6 × 7 and 7 × 6 are the same fact.
  4. Keep sessions to a few minutes and come back the next day rather than pushing on when it stops being fun.

Questions parents ask

How long does it take to learn the 11 times table?

With five minutes of practice most days, a single table usually becomes reliable within one to two weeks. Tables with weaker patterns, like the 7s and 8s, take longer than the 2s or 10s.

Should we practise the 11 times table in order or mixed up?

Both, in that sequence. In order builds the pattern and gives early success; mixed order is what proves the facts are actually memorised. Move on only when mixed questions are answered quickly.
